Fu Ye founder Gu Jie and co-founder Xu Zhenhua both graduated from the Department of Mechanics of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. They liked to study robots during their university years. Their team participated in the robot competition and won the Best Creative Award in the 2002 China Robot Competition.
After graduation, Gu Jie entered a foreign company and successively engaged in technology application, marketing and other work, while Xu Zhenhua has been engaged in technology research and development, and has worked for FANUC Robotics and Fanya Automobile.
After working for a few years, they saw the professional ceiling, and because of their interest and passion for robotics, by 2009, the two college partners were reunited to develop rehabilitation robots.
Gu Jie, founder and CEO of Fourier Intelligence
They choose the field of medical rehabilitation to realize their "robot dream" because: "traditional robot giants have not been involved, because they need to set up a special department to find medical related people, on the other hand, the unit price of medical devices is relatively high, can support a team, but also can do technical extension."
In 2012, Gu Jie and Xu Zhenhua formally founded GEM Robotics, which became a new milestone in the rehabilitation robot industry after several years of research and development with the Flexbot. In 2015, the two jointly established Fourier Intelligence to continue to cultivate the field of medical rehabilitation robots and develop more kinds of robots.
With the accumulation of experience in the first venture, Fourier Intelligence made a technological breakthrough in two years, launched two rehabilitation robots for the upper limb and lower limb exoskeleton, and became the first company in the field of rehabilitation robots to obtain FDA certification and achieve commercial landing.
In 2015, the company completed an angel round investment of 8 million yuan from IDG Capital and Zhangjiang Torch Venture Capital, completed A Pre-A round financing of 15 million yuan from Volcanic Stone Capital in 2016, and completed a round financing of 30 million yuan from Jingxu Venture Capital, Qianhai Fund, Volcanic Stone Capital and IDG Capital in February 2018. The continuous investment of IDG Capital and volcanic stone capital also reflects the capital's recognition of it.
Business barriers: technological advantage and first mover advantage
In foreign countries, rehabilitation robots were commercialized around 2000, and domestic high-end rehabilitation robots were not introduced until 2005, but the high price of 2-3 million at every turn made many hospitals prohibitive. Fourier Intelligence hopes to be a high level and grounded, cost-effective rehabilitation robot.
After more than a decade of research and development, Fourier Intelligence launched Fourier X1, China's first commercialized lower limb exoskeleton rehabilitation robot, in early 2017. On the one hand, it can assist paraplegia patients with spinal cord injury to sit, stand, walk and other motor functions; It can also help stroke patients regain their original walking ability.
The core technology of Fourier X1 is force feedback. Through force sensors installed in various joints and the sole of the foot, the exoskeleton robot can recognize the sensor signals and understand the user's walking intention to dynamically adjust its gait trajectory.
In 2016, Fourier Intelligence launched Fourier M2, the first tactile upper limb rehabilitation robot. Based on core technologies such as force feedback, M2 can accurately simulate various mechanical scenes in real life, provide users with a variety of goal-oriented training, stimulate the reorganization of brain function, and then reshape the function of the upper limb. According to reports, the device is also the first rehabilitation robot product from China to enter the European market.
